Breakfasting in Guangzhou, China

5 02 2017

My time in Guangzhou was limited so the plan was to eat breakfast out in order to cover the variety of Chinese dishes available.  So off I went the first morning to a dimsum restaurant to have a proper Guangzhou kind of brekkie.

Ordering was a bit of a challenge.  No English menu whatsoever at this restaurant which was one of the four classic, long-standing establishments in Guangzhou.

And the food was great.

Wrapping Up 2016

31 12 2016

My short trip to Penang, Malaysia was over as of December 30th in time for me to be back in Tokyo for the new year celebration, the most important of the holidays and very much a family event in Japan.  The Penang report will continue later but here is a post to wrap up the year 2016 with scenes from my monthly “eating around the world” get-together with a couple of very good friends.  The rule we try to keep is that we go to a place managed by someone from the region (not always possible but we manage for the most part) and we try not to repeat the same region.

Here we go.

January:  Paraguay

February, nao’s birthday month:  Hong Kong

March:  Moldova

April:  Afghanistan

May:  Kenya

June:  Palestine

July:  Spain, the first time to repeat a country though in a good way to celebrate taka’s birthday

August:  Pakistan

September:  Tibet

October:  Basque Country, my birthday month

November:  As with every year, this month is saved for “Beaujolais Nouveau”

December:  Christmas which we save for French or Italian dining every year and try to choose a restaurant where we are not forced to eat a Christmas menu.  Italian it was for 2016 managed by a chef from the south of Italy.

Happy new year’s eve!!

One More Birthday Bash

6 11 2016

For the October version of “eating around the world” my friends and I chose the “Basque Country“, one of the areas I really want to visit for real as do my friends.  We talked about going next summer over my birthday celebration.  🙂

Both of my friends got me the same cookware, only in different sizes!! LOL

Special Birthday Lunch with My Bestie

1 11 2016

Both my best friend and I have our birthday in October and we have been doing this “special birthday lunch” get-together for the last three or four years and we love it.  She always lets me choose where to go and this year our venue was a two-Michelin-starred French restaurant, Dominique Bouchet Tokyo.  Exquisite.

New Neighborhood French

10 08 2016

It’s very “neighborhood” in terms of its unpretentiousness in appearance, pricing, and size of restaurant, but the quality of what it serves is superb, with many surprises including interesting use of traditional Japanese ingredients in French cooking and pleasant service, all delivered by the chef himself in a counter-only one-man operation.  My Sunday lunch turned out to be quite amazing.

My Fave Underrated French Wine Bar

9 08 2016

Have probably written about this underrated bistro/wine bar before but I had not been there for quite some time.  Last Friday an opportunity to visit came up after being at Billboard Live Tokyo.

Didn’t disappoint.  Just some of what we had.  Beautiful lamb chops.

Mother’s 81st Birthday

31 07 2016

Another year has gone by and we are blessed to be celebrating my mother’s birthday with a fine French dinner yet again.

Not far from where they live, my parents walked to the venue.

Something I found unusual and most unFrench during the evening. Homemade popcorn made its way to our table. Parents did have very nice chilled soup of corn.

My main course. Lamb with foie gras made into a pie. I wanted lamb so it's what I ordered but I missed the part where it said it came with foie gras. Way too heavy though tasty.
