A couple of major summer festivals plus the usual Blue Note/Billboard Live gigs.  And in-store events.  And a music movie.  All good.

And an all-night event “Sonicmania” held as a pre-event of “Summer Sonic 2015“.  I went the night I came back from Bulgaria to see Marilyn Manson and the Prodigy.

Then Gilbert O’Sullivan at Billboard Live Tokyo.

A press conference announcing the release of a new solo violin album by esteemed violinist Narimichi Kawabata on which he performed a violin sonata written for him by composer Takashi Niigaki, a former “ghostwriter” for infamous Mamoru Samuragochi, followed by a Kawabata – Niigaki duo performance.

A bit early but summing up my rather limited music activities for this month with everything happening in Shibuya.

And went to see very talented, multi-tasking Kishi Bashi play Club Quattro the night before the Tower Records in-store event.  Great performance, very fun.  Here is something he did for a Seattle radio station.  It’s the same band as on this tour.

Music Events from the Past Week

15 01 2012

noon @ Sweet Basil 139, Tuesday, January 10, 2012.

In conjunction with the release of her new album Once Upon a Time.

Anne Akiko Meyers @ Kioi Hall, Friday, January 13, 2012.

She also has a new album, Air.

Women power.  And the audience was so surprised when Anne emerged on stage looking very pregnant.  More power to her. 😀

Tokyo Jazz 2011 Day 2

3 09 2011

So everyone who was to be at the festival today must have thought, would I get there in the rain and the wind given the forecast with a strong typhoon on its way??  But in reality, the weather stayed pretty calm.  When I got there this afternoon, the outdoor free concert was in progress.  (You can’t quite see it in the photo but there was a full band playing on stage at the far end.  It would’ve been “Amsterdam Jazz Connection + Benjamin Herman”.)

Live jazz in progress in the Tokyo International Forum courtyard.

The NHK FM radio booth insdie the Tokyo International Forum for live broadcast for Sunday, September 4.

What I went for today was Richard Galliano, the French accordion maestro, with Naoko Terai, a Japanese jazz violinist, followed by the Michel Legrand Trio – yes! led by the great French composer himself.

The Galliano-Terai show was an Astor Piazzolla program together with the Orchestra Camerata Ducale from Italy.  This video footage is Richard Galliano solo but the tempo in which they played “Libertango” was similar – very fast!

The Michel Legrand Trio with the maestro on the piano and vocal sang with lots of scatting which reminded me of his sister Christiane whom I saw a few years ago at Billboard Live Tokyo.  It was so wonderful to experience the composer’s interpretations of the great songs he has written.

The encore was the love theme from Les Parapluies de Cherbourg in which the trio went through the song in different rhythms including straight-ahead jazz, waltz, bossa nova, New Orleans, tango, Russian, and more?  I cannot remember now.  Such a precious experience.

This is what I think is the best version I could find on youtube with the maestro singing with Nana Mouskouri from 1973.

The maestro does not quite look the same but it seems that he’s aged well!
