Tempura @ Home

19 04 2015

Last weekend I had a sudden urge to try some “sansai” that is in season after seeing a lot of “kogomi” being sold in shops.  The best way I thought would be to fry the sansai as tempura and season with salt.

Kogomi was the only sansai available where I went to shop so got shiso, shishito, and kabocha which are all typical ingredients for tempura.

The batter which I confess I did not make from scratch was a bit too loose and did not stick to the vegetables.

Mixed salt and matcha for seasoning.

Despite the appearance, they tasted fine.  🙂

Lunching in Ginza

21 02 2015

Was out for a business lunch in the Ginza district the other day with my American guests.  One of us being a vegetarian, was trying to go for tempura and while Ginza is known for its many tempura restaurants I just could not find the right one to reserve because they were either full, didn’t take lunch reservations, too far to walk to, or too pricey.  My alternative was to go to a soba place which often serves good tempura as side dishes.

I was so spot on.

And they gave us a private room.  And our waitress was super nice.

Shiitake Tempura Munchies

19 07 2014

I picked these up at Kinokuniya the other day.

Labeled "Tempura Shiitake Snack".

Labeled “Tempura Shiitake Snack”.

Lots of garlicky smell though we never use garlic in tempura.

Heavily garlic flavored though in real tempura, we never use garlic.

They turned out to be yum.  I think shiitakes are better when big and fat and these looked quite big even after being fried and dried.  Never imagined a crunchy shiitake but it works!

Another Tempura Lunch

7 12 2013

When I did this tempura lunch, I was actually leaning towards but decided against “Anago Tendon” over the “Tempura Lunch”, an assortment of tempura with plain steamed rice (among other things) served with it but separately in a small rice bowl.  When I went back a couple of weeks later to the same restaurant, I went straight for the “anagodon”.

It was great but I think the “Tempura Lunch” might be the winner.

More Tempura Lunch

14 11 2013

Since our offices moved to the general neighborhood of Shibuya a few years ago, whenever I have the opportunity, mainly with visiting guests from overseas, I try to go to this tempura restaurant for lunch.  It is quite heavenly.  (Doing dinner here would be going well over the budget if you’re not careful. ^^)

There were four of us the other day, so I had asked for a room upstairs instead of the downstairs counter seats.
