A Belgian Night Out

It was time for our, two friends and myself, monthly get together last Saturday to try a new regional cuisine and we settled on Belgium as the theme.

But before heading to the restaurant, I decided to go for an aperitif at this classic hotel.





Having enjoyed my kir royale at the main bar which is a tiny room but which has a distinguished feel to it, with one wooden counter extending from one wall to the other with high stools, I headed out to our venue near Kanda.

The bar on the first floor and the main dining room on the second floor were both fully booked.  I saw my name at the top of the list.

Our filet Americain was made with horse meat and it was excellent…

Riga, the capital of Latvia, was where we stayed the longest on our Baltic trip and that was good as there was so much to see, so much to do, so much to eat. ^^

Here is our lunching experience.  Nothing special but really good.

Museum Cafe Experience

I’m not much of a museum goer but it’s nice to visit one or two when you’re traveling especially in a city such as Amsterdam where it boasts the highest density of museums in the world.

My friends and I decided to visit the Hermitage which is actually a satellite museum to the museum by the same name in St. Petersburg in Russia.

The exhibition was on Flemish painters.

The timing of our visit was such that it was perfect to get some lunch so off we went to the museum cafe.

According to my friends, the menu was totally of Belgian cuisine. I didn’t mind that but we just couldn’t figure out why the museum’s being Russian and being in Amsterdam…

All of the above took some effort in being brought out due to rather disorganized service at the cafe but the food was good and the atmosphere pleasant.  Had we been in a hurry, we would’ve gone totally nuts.

This is from last night.  Very different from any other year.  Firstly, no long-term planning.  Secondly, the whole area was quiet with just a few groups of people.  Thirdly, it was dark.  Going forward, I think I would prefer that.
