Kaiping Dialous: the Li Garden

26 02 2017

Been away with the flu but back to China and the Kaiping dialous.

One of the groups of dialous in Kaiping, Guangdong, China is this “garden” which served as the holiday villa to a wealthy “overseas Chinese” Mr. Xie Weili. Li Garden gives you the impression that it is an artificial Disneyland of dialous brought from different places and gathered in one location but it is actually how the place was originally built for Mr. Weili and his family.

Kaiping Diaolous: Zilicun

14 02 2017

UNESCO has named a few of the villages with diaolous and some of the diaolous themselves around Kaiping in the Guangdong Province, China as “World Heritage” sites.  The first stop I made with my newly hired driver was at “Zilicun“, a protected village with many significant diaolous.

Arriving in Kaiping

12 02 2017

I had read on many websites especially ones written in Japanese that upon visiting the city of Kaiping, China, as soon as you get off the bus, you will be approached by a driver or drivers that would offer to take you around for the day visiting the Kaiping Diaolous and Villages.

I was concerned that because I was visiting during the Chinese New Year season that maybe these so-called drivers may be off work.  Not so.  As soon as I came out of the bus terminal where my bus from central Guangzhou stopped, sure enough I was approached by one persistent driver.

The result of my negotiation to hire the driver. I knew it was on the high side but never really liking bargaining except for work when I have to negotiate deals, I accepted this slightly lower price from his original quote. But it's still very high.

My driver! I was initially sitting in the back but after the first stop, asked to be seated in the front for a better view.

The Day Trip to Kaiping

10 02 2017

I was in Guangzhou, China between January 27th and 30th and I used Sunday the 29th to visit Kaiping, the main purpose of my China trip.

I was initially going to spend an overnight in Kaiping and had made travel arrangements accordingly but at the last minute scrapped the idea and decided to do a day trip to the city.

Got up early on Sunday morning and embarked on my first subway ride in Guangzhou which was easy but I did make a mistake in my destination when I bought the ticket.

Arrived at the Guangzhou East Railway Station thinking that was where the bus to Kaiping left.  Wrong.  But didn’t realize so until I had finished breakfast at a fast food restaurant at the bus terminal.

Back to the subway to get to the right bus terminal.  And that wasn’t easy as there were three bus terminals at the Guangzhou Railway Station.  The first one I went to was another wrong terminal.

But finally arrived at the right one and purchased a ticket to Kaiping on the 9:30 am bus.

After a two-hour journey, arrived safely in drizzly Kaiping.

The Bar @ White Swan Hotel, Guangzhou, China

9 02 2017

Whenever I go away on a trip I try to visit the most classy hotel of where I’m staying and have a drink at its bar.

White Swan Hotel is Guangzhou’s premier luxury hotel.  Visited its bar during my brief stay in Guangzhou, China.

I found on this trip that Chinese beer in general is very weak, weaker than the so-called “light beer” which is not great.

Didn’t think it was going to be a modern high rise but yes it was.

They gave me this as souvenir.

They gave me this as souvenir.

Its service was nice but otherwise not great.  The little shrimp dish I ordered thinking it was going to be Chinese was an imitation of something Italian but not anything close…!
