I was very much looking forward to trying the New England clam chowder during my recent visit to Boston. It’s the best thing on a cold wintry day and it seemed like the best lunch on a cold spring day at a cafe on Newbury Street.
I also tried the “lite” version at Legal Sea Foods (on which I will write more about later). I prefer the regular creamy version.

The Union Oyster House is the oldest running restaurant in the U.S. and was serving clam chowder by 1836. I remember going there once and eating at the bar with my parents when we lived in Boston.
