Incense Coils in Macau

14 04 2014

Incense coils” are common in Japan.  They are generally green and flat and we use them as a mosquito repellent in the summer.

Incense coils I saw in Macau were something totally different.  They were for one thing enormously huge, yellow and used in temples and hanged high up from the ceiling over your head and at first I could not tell what they were until ashes fell on me.

They are quite big and impressive when hanging over your head.

Some of them had “ash trays” underneath to catch the burning incense.

These to me would be the normal kind of incense (although in Japan they are green or brown, never yellow.)

These hanged outside as though they were being dried before being put to use.
