There are two kinds of satays in Malacca. If you follow this link and go down to “8. Satay Celup” and “10. Satays”, you will see what they are. The satays I had were the latter and I had fun visiting this satay shop.
The satay choices you have are: pork, intestine, liver, and chicken. I had two skewers of pork and one of each of the rest. Each skewer is RM .70 and the condiments come automatically so my total bill was RM 3.50 (a little more than US$1). The reddish sauce is peanut sauce which was great. The white thing I could not tell what it was and I cannot seem to find out. The small red onions are mild and tasty.
The restaurant is in a totally residential neighborhood.
Oh I miss this now that I’m no longer in South East Asia haha!

The food in Malacca was very Southeast Asian which I loved but what I noticed about the city was that it seemed uncharacteristically rich for Southeast Asia. Everybody lived in decent houses (no shanty town section), no homeless people (we have so many in Tokyo), most cars are new and clean (like Japan), people seem heavier than in places like Thailand and Viet Nam. I found this interesting.

Boy, looks great. Particularly the satay celup–interesting things I didn’t recognize. Pig’s ear, maybe? Ken

In the picture of satay celup, the bottom dish is probably pigs ears though I’ve never seen them in this state so not too sure…

The white thing in cubes is apparently rice, “nasi ketupat”, boiled within a form and then sliced, and is supposed to accompany the satay skewers, sauce and veggies. Looks very yummy!
