The Red Square

6 05 2013

After I visited the Kremlin on my real first day in Moscow on May 1, I thought going to the Red Square would only be obvious as they are next to each other and it is one of the must-visit places in the city.

St. Basil’s Cathedral was closed.  Didn’t know why and assumed maybe because of the May Day.  Made a mental note to come back on another day to explore the inside of it.

That was not to be.  I went back on Saturday, May 4.

I tried again yesterday, May 5, the Easter Sunday.

Apparently until the end of May 9 when all the celebration ceremonies in commemoration of the Victory Day are over, the Square will be closed which means they are only getting ready for the day at this stage.  I guess it doesn’t matter that tourists during this season are disappointed…

Wonderful photos. Gave me a real sense of the space and color involved. Ken

Thank you. Kind of you to say that.

I always thought that that cathedral looked like a Hollywood movie set or something out of Disneyland and wondered if it was real and it is but I would have liked to have gone inside to really feel that. I hope there is next time.

Some of the building reminded me of 1) Disneyland; and 2) The 19th c. Smithsonian buildings on the National Mall in Washington. Ken

Disneyland I think would just be about right but don’t tell the Russian. ^^

The Smithsonian bldgs I may have gone to but probably not. I went to one museum in DC years ago but I don’t think it was this one.

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Another Cathedral I Could Not Visit in Moscow | A blog by Ayako Mathies

[…] I wrote that I was unable to visit the St. Basil’s Cathedral on the Red Square in Moscow during my visit to the city earlier this month.  Here is another cathedral, a must visit so every guide book says, I was unable to visit due to, apparently, President Putin and Prime Minister Medvedev having been there attending the Easter mass at the time I wished to visit as I found out the following day from the morning paper.  (See their picture in the church here.)
