Birds in Bhutan

14 12 2010

Some are common (or so I understand).

But the black-necked crane is not.  They come out to the Phobhjikha Valley between October and February.  In Phobhijikha there are no electricity poles or cables in sight and the use of electricity is limited even in hotels between certain hours of the day, all in an effort to protect the endangered species.

We were fortunate to have come across, through binoculars, a pair of them in May which is very unusual.  We were told one of the pair was injured and that is why the other one stayed as well.  They never leave their significant other, we were told.
